Complete Utility Contractors (CUC) is working on a sanitary sewer upgrade for the City of Delta, along Taylor Way and Shepherd Way.

The project will replace a sewer pipe that's been in the ground for approximately 68 years. The existing 200 mm-diameter asbestos cement pipe is being replaced with a much larger, 450 mm-diameter PVC pipe, giving this important part of Delta's underground infrastructure a new lease on life.

Replacing an old sewer pipe isn't quite as simple as digging a trench and laying a new one. This project involves installing approximately 715 metres of 450 mm PVC sewer pipe, with sections buried between 3.5 and 6 metres underground. That's a fair bit of digging!

The work also includes installing approximately 70 metres of 300 mm HDPE pipe up a steep slope — a task that calls for careful planning and the right approach to working on challenging terrain.

On top of that, our crew will install or reconnect approximately 520 metres of residential sewer service connections. These smaller pipes connect individual homes to the main sewer line, so getting them right is just as important as installing the larger pipe serving the neighbourhood.

Another interesting part of the job is a sewer connection in the middle of Nordel Way. This tie-in requires night work, allowing our team to carry out the connection while coordinating around traffic on this busy route.

Underground construction inevitably brings some disruption above ground, and we're mindful that people still need to get to work, school and home while the project is underway.

Approximately 100 homes along Taylor Way and Shepherd Way may be affected by the work. Commuters and students who travel along nearby Russell Drive and Patricia Drive may also notice construction activity in the area.

Work is scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The Nordel Way tie-in will require additional night work.

We appreciate the patience of residents and road users as our crew works through the construction. While much of the work takes place out of sight once the road is restored, the benefits will remain underground for decades.
